Quick answer
Residential dumpster rental means a roll-off container dropped in your driveway for a home project. Most Dothan homeowners choose a 15-yard for garage or attic cleanouts and a 20-yard for remodels, roofs and estate cleanouts. A dumpster on your own property generally doesn’t need a city permit. You load it on your schedule, usually over about a week, and we pick it up when you call.
What do Dothan homeowners rent dumpsters for?
Most residential jobs fall into one of these. Each has its own sizing and loading quirks.
Home and garage cleanouts
Attics, garages, spare rooms and storage buildings. Bulky but light, so a 15-yard usually covers it.
Kitchen and bath remodels
Cabinets, countertops, tile, drywall and fixtures. Tile and plaster are heavy, so mention them when you book.
Estate cleanouts
Clearing a loved one’s home on your timeline, even from out of town. We coordinate delivery and pickup by phone and text.
Moving and PCS cleanouts
Fort Novosel families and anyone downsizing. Clear out before the movers come or before closing.
Rental turnovers
Landlords and property managers clearing furniture, carpet and junk between tenants, when speed matters most.
Yard, shed and storm cleanup
Fallen limbs, old fencing, sheds and trailers. Common on bigger lots out in the county. Ask before mixing yard waste with household junk.
Why rent a dumpster instead of using the curb?
Curbside pickup works for weekly trash. It isn’t built for a project.
- Household pickup has limits. Houston County’s collection policy doesn’t treat furniture, carpet, construction or remodeling debris, appliances, batteries, tires or propane tanks as regular household garbage. City of Dothan residents should check with Environmental Services about what weekly collection will take.
- Contractor debris isn’t homeowner trash. If a contractor tears it out, it generally isn’t collected at the curb.
- The city landfill is closed to the public. Hauling it yourself means driving to a C&D site like Omussee on Kinsey Road or Rosehill in Midland City, paying their fee, and repeating that for every load. See our Dothan landfill guide.
- Piles attract pests. A wet debris pile is a home for mosquitoes, snakes and rats.

How does residential dumpster rental work?
- Call or text. Tell us what you’re clearing out, your address and the day you need it.
- Pick the size and the spot. We’ll recommend a size and talk through placement: driveway width, low limbs, soft ground and access.
- We deliver. You don’t need to be home if the spot is marked and clear of cars.
- You load it. Work at your own pace. Most rentals run about a week, and extensions are a call or text away.
- We haul it off. Call or text when it’s ready, and we pick it up and handle disposal.
What size dumpster does a homeowner need?

| Rental turnover | 15 yard |
| Kitchen remodel | 15 to 20 yard |

Where should the dumpster go, and will it hurt my driveway?
Most residential dumpsters go in the driveway. A roll-off is about 7.5 to 8 feet wide, and a standard driveway is 9 to 12 feet wide, so it usually fits with room to spare.
- Protect the surface. Ask for boards under the rails, especially on newer concrete or asphalt.
- Mind soft ground. Dothan averages about 57 inches of rain a year. Grass and soft yards can rut under a loaded container.
- Check overhead. The truck needs about 23 feet of clearance from limbs and power lines and about 60 feet of straight-line space to back in.
- Gravel and rural drives: pick a firm, level spot and stay clear of septic tanks and drain fields.
- HOAs and renters: check HOA rules and get the landlord’s okay before booking.
If the dumpster has to go in the street or the public right-of-way, check with the City of Dothan first. On your own property, a permit generally isn’t needed.

What can go in a residential dumpster?
Usually fine: furniture, carpet and padding, flooring, drywall, lumber, cabinets, shingles, household junk, toys, clothing and yard waste.
Not allowed: paint, motor oil, chemicals, pesticides, pool chemicals, batteries, tires and propane tanks. Most haulers also turn away TVs, electronics and food waste.
Ask first: mattresses, refrigerators, freezers and AC units. Appliances with refrigerant usually need special handling.

Loading tips that save time and headaches
- Put heavy items on the bottom and spread the weight evenly.
- Break down furniture and flatten boxes. You’ll fit far more.
- Keep everything below the top rim. Overfilled dumpsters can’t be hauled safely.
- Use the swing door to walk heavy or bulky items in.
- Tarp the load before rain. Wet debris gets heavier.
- Place it close to the house and tarp it overnight so neighbors don’t add their junk.
- In summer, load early in the morning. Wiregrass heat is no joke.
