Fall in the Wiregrass: Book Your Dumpster Before the Rush

Early fall is a busy stretch for dumpster rentals around Dothan. Here’s why it pays to call a few days ahead:

  • Hurricane season runs through November 30. Hurricane Michael came through on October 10, 2018, and Dothan was still clearing debris for months afterward. When a storm is in the forecast, dumpsters book up fast.
  • Fall yard work. Leaves, pine straw and fallen limbs add up quickly on lots with big oaks and pines.
  • Holiday prep and year-end projects. Garage cleanouts before family visits, and contractors pushing to finish remodels before the year ends.

Tell us your project and the date you need it, and we’ll get you on the calendar.

Roll-Off Dumpster Rental for Every Kind of Dothan Project

Most people who call us aren’t dumpster experts, and they shouldn’t have to be. They’ve got a roof coming off Monday, a parent’s house to clear before closing, or a yard full of limbs after a storm. Tell us the job, and we’ll match the dumpster to it.

Common Dumpster Problems in Dothan and How We Solve Them

Most calls start with a problem, not a dumpster size. Here’s what we hear most and what fixes it.

What you’re dealing withWhat we do about it
The curb won’t take your pile of remodel debris, furniture or contractor wasteDrop one dumpster that takes all of it, then haul the load to the right facility
A roof is coming off and shingles are heavySize the dumpster for weight, not just space, and plan a swap on multi-layer roofs
The yard or driveway is soft after heavy rainLay boards under the rails and pick a firm, level spot
Low oak limbs or power lines hang over the drivewayCheck clearance before delivery and choose a spot the truck can safely reach
You’re out of town settling a loved one’s estateSchedule delivery and pickup by phone and text, with no need to be there
Tile, concrete or dirt from a remodelUse a smaller container sized for heavy debris
Neighbors are adding their junk to your dumpsterPlace it close to the house and tarp it overnight
The job runs long or the dumpster fills earlyExtend the rental or swap in an empty one

What size dumpster do I need?

For most Dothan homes, a 20-yard dumpster is the safe middle pick. It handles a roof tear-off on a typical house or a full room remodel and still fits a standard driveway. Go smaller for single-room cleanouts and heavy debris like concrete. Go bigger for whole-house cleanouts, new construction and large demolition.

SizeRoughly holdsBest forWatch out for
10 yardAbout 3 pickup truck loadsBathroom remodel, small cleanout, concrete, dirt or brickBulky furniture fills it fast
15 yardAbout 4 to 5 pickup loadsGarage cleanout, flooring job, small kitchen remodelTile and plaster get heavy quickly
20 yardAbout 6 pickup loadsRoof tear-off, full room remodel, estate cleanoutShingle weight on multi-layer roofs
30 yardAbout 9 pickup loadsWhole-house cleanout, new construction, large remodelTaller walls; load through the swing door
40 yardAbout 12 pickup loadsCommercial cleanouts, major construction, large land clearingNeeds lots of room; not for heavy debris

Pickup-load numbers are rough rules of thumb, and exact dimensions vary by manufacturer. Most roll-off dumpsters run about 7.5 to 8 feet wide no matter the size. They get longer and taller as the yardage goes up.

Still not sure? Tell us what you’re throwing out, and roughly how much. We’ll recommend a size so you don’t pay for space you won’t use or run out halfway through the job.

Why a Curb Pile Often Isn’t an Option in Dothan

A lot of folks try the curb first. Here’s why many end up calling for a dumpster instead.

  • The city landfill is closed to the public. You can’t just load a trailer and drive to the city dump. More on that below.
  • Household pickup has limits. Houston County’s collection policy doesn’t treat furniture, carpet, construction or remodeling debris, appliances, batteries, tires or propane tanks as regular household garbage. Debris a contractor produces isn’t collected as homeowner trash at all. City of Dothan residents should check with Environmental Services about what weekly trash collection will take.
Curbside pile of old furniture and household junk beside an orange roll-off dumpster on a residential street
A curb pile like this can sit for weeks. A roll-off dumpster clears it in one haul.
  • Mixed piles get left behind. After Hurricane Michael in 2018, city crews picked up clean piles first and left piles mixed with fencing or sheetrock. A dumpster keeps the whole job in one place and off the curb.
  • Storms don’t wait for pickup day. When a tornado drops trees across your yard, a week of waiting means a week of mosquitoes, snakes and rats nesting in the pile.
  • Big life events come with big piles. Dothan has a lot of rental homes, a large retiree population and steady military moves. Tenant turnovers, estate cleanouts and PCS moves all produce more than a trash cart can handle.

Is the Dothan landfill open to the public?

No. As of our October 2026 check, the City of Dothan lists its landfill as closed. That’s why so many searches for the “Dothan dump” end in frustration.

The short history:

  • The city stopped taking public drop-offs years ago to stretch the landfill’s life.
  • ADEM (the Alabama Department of Environmental Management) approved an expansion in 2019, and the expanded landfill reopened in August 2020.
  • It closed again in spring 2022 after a Montgomery County circuit court ruling invalidated the permit. The city has since pursued a permit modification with ADEM.
  • In the meantime, Dothan’s garbage has been hauled out of state to Springhill Regional Landfill in Campbellton, Florida.

City web pages have shown conflicting hours and status notices, so call Environmental Services before driving out.

Other disposal sites in the area

  • Omussee C&D Landfill (Kinsey Road): construction and demolition debris
  • Rosehill Landfill (Midland City): construction and demolition debris
  • Coffee County Landfill (Elba): household waste, C&D debris and recycling
  • Waste Away (Midland City): a transfer station, not a final landfill
  • Springhill Regional Landfill (Campbellton, FL)

None of these accept household hazardous materials like paint, oil, pesticides or pool chemicals. With a dumpster rental, you don’t deal with any of it. We haul the load and take it to the right facility for what’s inside.

Read our full Dothan landfill and disposal guide, reviewed monthly.

Is renting a dumpster worth it, or should I haul it myself?

For a few loads, hauling it yourself can work if you have a truck or trailer. With the city landfill closed to the public, though, construction debris has to go to a site like Omussee C&D on Kinsey Road or Rosehill in Midland City, and every trip means loading, driving, unloading and paying that site’s disposal fee. For a remodel, a roof or a whole-house cleanout, a dumpster in the driveway usually saves days of trips.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Dothan?

Not if it sits on your own property. A dumpster in your driveway or on your lot generally doesn’t need a permit. If it has to go in the street or the public right-of-way, check with the City of Dothan before it’s placed. Right-of-way placement is handled through the city’s Street Division.

  • HOA neighborhoods may have their own rules on dumpsters and how long they can stay.
  • Renters should get the landlord’s okay before booking.
  • Outside city limits, in Headland, Ozark or out in the county, check with that town or county if the dumpster can’t go on private property.

Will a dumpster fit in my driveway, and will it damage it?

In most cases it fits. A roll-off dumpster is about 7.5 feet wide, and a standard driveway runs 9 to 12 feet wide. Plan on roughly 60 feet of straight-line space for the truck to back in, plus about 23 feet of overhead clearance free of limbs and power lines.

  • Soft ground after rain. Dothan averages about 57 inches of rain a year. Ask for boards under the rails to protect concrete and asphalt.
  • Big old trees. In older neighborhoods like the Garden District, mature oaks and pines hang low over driveways.
  • Gravel and dirt drives. Pick a firm, level spot and keep clear of septic tanks and drain fields.
  • Tight lots and slopes. Tell us about steep grades, gates or narrow entrances ahead of time.

Storm Debris Dumpsters for Tornado and Hurricane Cleanup

Storm cleanup is part of life in the Wiregrass. A few reminders from recent years:

  • Hurricane Michael (2018) brought down the Garden District’s tall trees, blocking roads and damaging homes around Magnolia, Orange Avenue and Woodlawn.
  • March 18, 2021: an EF-1 tornado tore across west Dothan, including Marshall Road and the Highlands along Highway 84.
  • March 31, 2025: an EF-1 tornado with winds near 105 mph formed near Rimson Road, snapping trees, damaging roofs and hitting Dothan Prep Academy on South Oates Street.
  • March 12, 2026: storms brought down trees and power lines, with damage in Glenwood Estates in Kinsey.
  • May 2026: a tornado near Webb damaged homes and dropped trees along Highway 52.

If a storm hits your place

  • Photograph everything first. Your insurance adjuster will want to see the damage before it goes in the dumpster.
  • Stay clear of downed lines. Let the power company clear them before anyone starts cutting or loading.
  • Watch the weight. Wet limbs, soaked drywall and roofing are heavy. Ask how much weight your rental includes.
  • Be careful who you hire. After Hurricane Michael, Dothan police warned residents about cleanup scams. Work with local companies that give clear terms before anything is delivered or torn off.

When Dothan Needs Dumpsters Most: A Seasonal Calendar

Demand in the Wiregrass follows the weather and the calendar. Planning around it gets you the dumpster you need when you need it.

March to May: storms and roof season

Spring is tornado season in the Wiregrass. Dothan took EF-1 tornadoes in March 2021 and March 2025. Expect roof tear-offs, fallen limbs and fence repairs, plus spring cleaning. Book quickly after a storm.

June to August: moves and heat

Summer is peak moving season, including PCS moves for Fort Novosel families. Hurricane season starts June 1. Load early in the morning and take breaks; Wiregrass heat is no joke.

September to November: hurricanes and fall cleanup

The Atlantic hurricane season peaks from mid-August through October. Fall brings leaf and limb cleanup and garage cleanouts before the holidays.

December to February: remodels and estates

Cooler weather is a good time for kitchen and bath remodels, estate cleanouts and year-end business cleanups. Rainy spells soften yards, so plan for boards under the rails.

Scheduling tips

  • Call early in the day for the best shot at same-day delivery.
  • After a big storm, get on the list as soon as it’s safe. Demand climbs fast.
  • Move cars, boats and trailers out of the drop spot the night before.
  • Plan around trash day so the truck isn’t blocked by garbage carts.

What can’t go in a dumpster, and where do those items go in Dothan?

Hazardous materials can’t go in a roll-off dumpster. That includes paint, motor oil, chemicals, pesticides, pool chemicals, batteries, tires and propane tanks. Most haulers also turn away TVs, electronics and food waste.

Old TV, electronics and cardboard boxes inside a roll-off dumpster
TVs and electronics are turned away by most haulers. Ask before you toss them.
ItemWhere it can go instead
TiresAuto shops that take old tires, such as Road Mart on Ross Clark Circle
Phones and small electronicsThe ecoATM kiosk at Walmart on Montgomery Highway
Paint, pesticides, household chemicalsCity waste amnesty days when scheduled, or a certified hazardous waste handler
Refrigerators and AC unitsAsk first. Appliances with refrigerant usually need special handling
Mattresses and box springsUsually allowed, but mention them when you book

What’s usually fine: furniture, carpet, flooring, drywall, lumber, cabinets, shingles, household junk and yard waste. Some disposal sites want yard waste kept separate, so ask before you mix limbs with household debris.

How Dumpster Rental Works

  1. Call or text us. Tell us what you’re throwing out, your address and when you need it.
  2. Pick the size and the spot. We’ll recommend a size and talk through placement: driveway, boards, low limbs and access.
  3. We deliver. You don’t need to be home if the spot is marked and clear.
  4. You load it. Take the time your project needs. Need more days or a fresh dumpster? Call or text.
  5. We haul it off. Let us know when it’s ready, and we’ll pick it up and handle disposal.

How fast can I get a dumpster in Dothan?

Often the same day or the next morning, as long as a dumpster is available and you call early. During storm cleanups and busy spring weekends, booking a few days ahead is the safer bet.

Use the swing door to walk heavy or bulky items in instead of lifting them over the wall.

Loading tips that save headaches

  • Put heavy items on the bottom and spread the weight evenly.
  • Break down furniture and flatten boxes to save space.
  • Keep everything below the top rim. Overfilled dumpsters can’t be hauled safely.
  • Use the swing door to walk in heavy or bulky items instead of lifting them over the wall.

How much weight can a dumpster hold?

Every rental comes with a weight allowance, and some materials eat it up fast. Tile, shingles, concrete, brick, dirt, plaster and water-soaked storm debris are all far heavier than they look.

A common surprise in local reviews: a dumpster half-full of tile can outweigh one heaped with furniture. Roofing is the other big one. A single roofing square (100 square feet) of asphalt shingles commonly weighs around 200 to 400 pounds, depending on the type and how many layers come off.

Overfilled roll-off dumpster with debris piled above the top rim
Debris above the top rim can't be hauled safely. Keep the load level with the walls.
  • Ask how much weight is included before you book.
  • Tell us if you’re tossing tile, concrete, dirt or multiple roof layers. A smaller, heavy-duty load may fit better than a big dumpster.
  • Keep a tarp handy to cover the load before rain. Rain adds weight.

Roofers, Builders and Contractors: Keep the Job Moving

A late dumpster stalls a crew. Here’s how we keep job-site debris from slowing you down.

  • Swaps by text. Send a quick text when it’s full and keep your crew working.
  • More than one dumpster. Separate containers for different job sites or debris types.
  • Placed for the job. Close to the roofline or work area, wherever the truck can safely reach.
  • Heavy debris planning. Shingles, tile and concrete sized by weight, so you’re not stuck mid-job.
  • Scheduled around tear-off day. Delivered before the crew starts and picked up when you call.
  • Clear rules up front. Your crew knows what can and can’t go in before the first load.

What to tell us when you order

  • The job address and the best spot for the dumpster
  • Your start date and how long the job should run
  • What’s coming out: shingles, drywall, framing, concrete or mixed debris
  • For roofs: the number of squares and how many layers
  • Gates, slopes, low limbs or power lines near the drop spot
  • Who on the crew will call or text for pickup

Typical Dothan Projects, Start to Finish

These are typical ways common local jobs play out, based on what Dothan customers deal with most. They aren’t individual customer stories.

A roof tear-off in west Dothan after a spring storm

The situation: Hail and high wind leave a house in the Highlands area needing a new roof. The roofer plans a one-day tear-off.

What works: A 20-yard dumpster in the driveway, with boards under the rails because spring rains have softened the ground, close enough to the roofline for the crew to drop shingles straight in.

The local wrinkle: Older homes often have two layers of shingles, which can double the weight. Planning a swap, or starting with a heavier-duty container, keeps the job from stalling.

Takeaway: On roofing jobs, count layers and plan for weight, not just space.

An estate cleanout in the Garden District

The situation: A family living out of state has to clear their late mother’s home before listing it. The house is older, surrounded by big oaks, and full of 40 years of belongings.

What works: Donate and set aside keepsakes first, then bring in a 20- or 30-yard dumpster for what’s left. Delivery is scheduled by phone, with the spot marked by a neighbor, and placement accounts for low-hanging limbs over the driveway.

The local wrinkle: Furniture and carpet are bulky but light, while old plaster or tile from a bathroom is heavy. Mention both when booking.

Takeaway: You don’t have to be in Dothan to get an estate cleanout done. Clear communication does the heavy lifting.

A rental turnover in 36303

The situation: A landlord’s tenant moves out and leaves furniture, stained carpet and bags of junk. The next tenant moves in within two weeks.

What works: A 15-yard dumpster delivered quickly, with pickup scheduled as soon as the carpet and junk are out so the painters and cleaners can get to work.

The local wrinkle: An open dumpster can attract “help” from neighbors. Placing it close to the house and tarping it overnight keeps other people’s trash out.

Takeaway: On turnovers, speed and scheduling matter more than size.

Dumpster Rental FAQs

Quick answers to what Dothan customers ask most. Don’t see yours? Call or text and ask.

A few days ahead is ideal, especially in spring and during hurricane season, when storms drive demand. Same-day or next-morning delivery is often possible if a dumpster is available.

Most rentals run about a week. If your project runs long, call or text to extend.

No, as long as the spot is marked, clear of vehicles and easy for the truck to reach.

Usually yes, but some disposal sites handle them differently, so mention them when you book.

It depends on where the load goes. Some facilities want brush and limbs kept separate. Tell us what you’re tossing, and we’ll tell you what can go together.

Ask for a swap: we pick up the full one and drop an empty one so the work keeps moving.

No. A loaded roll-off can only be moved by the truck. Pick the spot carefully before delivery.

Place it close to the house, cover it with a tarp at night, and get the job done quickly. If someone else’s items end up inside, they count toward your weight allowance.

For a few bulky items, junk removal can make sense. For multi-day projects, remodels, roofing or whole-house cleanouts, a dumpster lets you work on your own schedule and load as much as fits.

Sometimes, but grass and soft ground can rut under a loaded container, especially after rain. Firm, level ground is best.

Yes. Many contractors order directly. Just make sure everyone agrees on placement and who calls for pickup.

Yes. We serve nearby towns across the Wiregrass, including Headland, Midland City, Ashford and Abbeville. Call or text with your address.

Don’t Let the Pile Sit

The longer debris sits, the bigger the problem gets.

  • Pests move in. Wet debris piles hold standing water, and the city sprays for mosquitoes from April through October for a reason. Snakes and rats like a pile too.
  • Rain adds weight. Soaked drywall, carpet and limbs get heavier and harder to move.
  • The curb won’t take it all. Contractor and remodeling debris isn’t picked up as regular household trash.
  • Call or text to book
